A small number of people of European ethnicity first came to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) as settlers during the late nineteenth century.  Many had originally emigrated to South Africa to escape poverty and to consolidate the British imperial presence in a colony of settlement.  One reason for leaving the Cape was to escape British rule but overwhelmingly the journey north was about grasping opportunity.
